Background of the Study

Sustainable construction practices are essential in minimizing the environmental impacts of building activities, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas like Jos South Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State. Local artisans, who play a significant role in the construction industry, are critical to the implementation of sustainable construction practices. These artisans are involved in various stages of construction, from building design to the actual construction process, and have the potential to influence the materials used, the energy efficiency of structures, and the overall environmental footprint of the construction activities. Despite their key role, there is limited research on how local artisans are contributing to or hindering sustainable construction practices in Jos South. This study seeks to explore the knowledge, skills, and contributions of local artisans to sustainable construction and the challenges they face in promoting these practices in the local context (Sule & Zubairu, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Local artisans in Jos South LGA have an influential role in the construction industry, but there is limited awareness and application of sustainable practices. Factors such as inadequate training, limited access to environmentally friendly building materials, and a lack of support from both government and the construction industry have hindered the integration of sustainable practices. This study aims to examine the current role of local artisans in promoting sustainability in construction, identify the challenges they face, and propose solutions to enhance their contribution to sustainable development.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To assess the awareness and knowledge of local artisans in Jos South regarding sustainable construction practices.

• To identify the challenges faced by local artisans in adopting sustainable construction practices.

• To recommend strategies for enhancing the role of local artisans in promoting sustainable construction in the area.

1.4 Research Questions

• To what extent are local artisans in Jos South aware of sustainable construction practices?

• What challenges do local artisans face in promoting sustainable construction in Jos South?

• What strategies can be implemented to improve the contribution of local artisans to sustainable construction?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Local artisans in Jos South lack adequate knowledge and skills regarding sustainable construction practices.

• H2: The adoption of sustainable construction practices is limited due to inadequate training and access to eco-friendly materials.

• H3: Increased awareness, training, and access to sustainable building materials will significantly enhance the contribution of local artisans to sustainable construction.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it will highlight the crucial role of local artisans in promoting sustainable construction in Jos South. By identifying the challenges they face, this research will offer valuable insights into improving their practices, thereby contributing to more sustainable urban development. The findings will also inform local policymakers, construction professionals, and educational institutions about the need for training programs and resource allocation to support the adoption of sustainable construction methods (Sule & Zubairu, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of local artisans in promoting sustainable construction within Jos South LGA. It will assess their awareness, practices, and the challenges they encounter in adopting sustainable methods. Limitations may include the availability of data regarding specific training programs and the reach of sustainable construction practices among artisans in the region.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Sustainable Construction: Building practices that aim to reduce the environmental impact of construction, using eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, and promoting long-term environmental stewardship.

• Local Artisans: Skilled laborers involved in various aspects of construction, such as bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, and painting.

• Eco-friendly Materials: Construction materials that have minimal environmental impact, are sustainably sourced, and are energy-efficient.
